Managing grass root Social Development projects and
Unique ID Generation for Bottom of Pyramid customers
using Cloud Computing
Founded in 1980 as a grassroots development NGO, SEDS (Social
Education and Development Society) is currently one of the largest
NGOs in India. Based in the Anantapur District of Andhra Pradesh,
India’s second most drought-prone area, SEDS overlooks and manages
the needs of more than 250 villages and its population. Their operations
consist of conducting welfare programs followed up by regular surveys
which provide real-time population & resource statistics and a road-map
of how programs work, the channelization of funds/efforts and the
resultant success/failure of programs.
WOLF worked with SEDS to design a census information management
SaaS for serving the Bottom of Pyramid (BoP)customers. The application
allows collection and consolidation using different devices into a central
repository and automates the process of data analysis, presenting
reports and charts on different metrics at the click of a button.
- Mrs. Manil Jayasena,
CEO, SEDS
Business Challenge
- The requirement for a structured and connected system for
tracking and managing the needs of a large rural population
spread over more than 250 villages.
- The need to assign Unique Identification (UID) to every individual
that allows SEDS to track progress at the individual and
household levels.
- SEDS was managing large repositories of historical data
maintained in spreadsheets, databases and paper records.
- Manual methods were used for data gathering and analysis which
were time consuming and error prone.
- Urgent need to streamline and automate the program-survey
process.
- To create an interface between the SEDS team and interested
parties consisting of donors, project stakeholders or any party with
an interest in their operations.
Solution: 120 hours to design, develop and deploy India's first Census
Information Management SaaS(CIMS) serving BOP customers
- CIMS enables SEDS to collect, relate & consolidate data into a
central repository and automates the process of data analysis,
presenting reports and charts on different metrics at the click of a
button.
- Stores & manages data of 250 villages, 980 SHGs and auto
generates Unique Identification (UID) for more than 40,000 BOP
individuals.
- The importing of past data records maintained in databases &
spreadsheets allowed SEDS to scrutinize as well as generate
analytics based on historical data of the past 15 years.
- The global reach and web openness of CIMS allows SEDS to
provide real-time project information to the public, subscribers or a
private audience (such as donors) in the form of emails, RSS
feeds, blogs and website content.
- CIMS was built keeping in mind the dynamic nature of SEDS
operations enabling new program surveys to be added with
minimum configuration.
- Strict security and access control was implemented to ensure data
integrity and privacy.
Results and Summary
- Affordable automation for key processes and generating UIDs
(Unique Identification ID) for more than 40,000 BOP individuals.
- CIMS allows SEDS and donors to collectively track the impact and
progress of social development welfare projects.
Light-weight applications that enables SEDS to manage their operations
using only a browser and Internet connection with a low bandwidth
requirement.
Elastic Scalability: Being one of the largest Indian NPOs working with dynamic
parameters such as population and resources, scalability was a primary
concern for SEDS. The elastic scalability offered by CIMS enables the addition
of program surveys and analytics on the same with minimum configuration.
